Each year, Senator Patty Murray celebrates a few of our state’s unsung community heroes by awarding them the symbol of her start in politics. She was dubbed as “just another mother in tennis shoes” – a comment that fueled her feisty and successful charge at a proposed state funding cut for education. The award celebrates people who’ve accomplished something extraordinary in service of others, like the group of three 9th graders, Maddy Berkman, Sierra Alef-Defoe, and Kelsey Josund, who founded The Pink Polka Dots Guild in tribute to a dear friend who died of brain cancer. They have since raised more than $100,000 through various fund raisers for brain cancer research. And Mike Pereira, who created an active and popular community-service social club to pull vets out of isolation and get them involved in their communities. And Shirley Morrow: A former teacher who started a weekly dinner program that feeds the homeless and through her effort, raises awareness in her community about their plight. Special guests Senator Dick Durbin and Senator Maria Cantwell were on hand to thank them and promote Senator Murray as she gets closer to kicking off the campaign for her 4th term. Red Fish Blue Fish was at the Washington State Convention Center. to capture her emotionally-uplifting event and pre-luncheon reception line.
